To button or unbutton? How to wear your polo shirt?

A question was asked of us whether a polo shirt should be buttoned or remained unbuttoned in a casual setting.  The answer is, it depends.  With a two button placket on a slim fit shirt, leaving both buttons unbuttoned looks fairly natural and allows the lapels to hang unencumbered.  With longer three button plackets that might look a bit strange.  Buttoning the bottom two buttons on a 3 button placket will allow the shirt to look neat and tidy.

We have also seen folks button all the way to the top.  Some folks can get by with that look.

Finally, a no button polo…  Well, may your shirt NOT look like this :)

Often a button front broadcloth shirt will still feel too constricting with just the top button unbuttoned, so I unbutton the second one as well. This can look OK sometimes, but frequently the collar will sag and look bad. I thought I might use velcro to attach the placket at the point halfway between the 2nd and third button, or put stiffeners in the plackets. Has anyone come up with a workable solution?
